The Torah (old testament scroll) is often decorated with a Torah shield. This decoration is removed prior to reading from the Torah.
Tree of Life Mandala (Torah Shield) was commissioned by Molly O'Shea and Family for Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel to honor Rabbi Dan Fink upon his retirement after 30 years of service. Created in 2024, this Torah Shield is made out of sterling silver, found beach rocks (quartz), moonstone, lapis, turquoise, jasper, amethyst, garnet, citrine, rose quartz, blue lace agate, emerald, carnelian, peridot, sapphire. There are seven trees with seven branches each, 18 quartz beach rocks, 12 stones to represent the 12 tribes (as prescribed in the Torah for the High Priest’s garments), and a moonstone set in the middle of a Star of David, referencing the connection Judaism and the Torah have to the lunar calendar.
